In the UK, 'British Cycling' is the Sport England funded, governing body of the sport, responsible for all competition and development activities. 'Go ride' is the name given to a British Cycling initiative to specially develop a Premier League of the top 100 cycling clubs. These clubs are specially selected for having all the requirements to encourage young people into our sport.

The Chelmer Cycling Club is now an accredited Go ride Club. We have always been one of the foremost clubs for youth activities. We work in local schools and with the Sports Development Officers of Chelmsford Borough Council, to develop suitable cycling activities for youngsters. We run training schemes in schools and summer holiday activities on behalf of the council. We are lucky in Chelmsford to have a cycle path network that enables us to take very young riders on up-to ten mile rides, without going on to main roads, and of course our indoor interactive facilities are ideal for safe training. Our coaches are specially trained to understand the needs of young people, having completed 'Good Practise and Child Protection Training', are fully insured and all have C.R.B. checks for your security. Go ride clubs also have trained Child Welfare Officers for your additional assurance.

We have a special Saturday Morning Club for youngsters, which starts at 10.30 and finishes around 12.00. Parents may stay with the youngsters or leave them for the period.

These Saturday morning sessions are at our Meteor Way headquarters and are run by a fully qualified coach. We operate regardless of the weather as we can use our indoor facilities.

The following activities are part of British Cycling's Go ride package to help clubs.

  • Resources to support the delivery of a regular programme of structured coaching sessions for youth and junior riders.

  • An introduction to a range of cycling disciplines through exciting and challenging activities.

  • Youth and junior riders can record details of their best times from the Go-Ride Skills Tests and Stage 1 of the World Class Start Talent Team Tests on the British Cycling website, to build up a personal record of performances.

  • On-line league tables where youth and junior riders can compare their times with those of their friends of the same age.

  • Web-based national leagues, personal achievement certificates and an award scheme for youth and junior riders.

  • Links between local schools and clubs to encourage more youth and junior club members.

  • Support from the network of Regional Coaching and Club Development Officers to apply for external funding.

However, the best way to understand the Go ride programme, is to take a look at the web site, which can be accessed from this link. Go-Ride But come straight back to the Chelmer site, as there's much more to see!

Cycling Proficiency Training

Chelmer Cycling Club now organises ' Bikeability' National Standard Cycle Training for youngsters. The new National Standard has been developed by the Department of Transport in conjunction with a number of cycling bodies as a replacement for Cycling Proficiency.

Go Ride Gears 1 & 2 are now aligned to Level 1 on the National Standard, so youngsters who have completed a Go Ride course, are on the way to the Bikeability National Standard Certificate! For more information about cycle training for both youngsters and adults, have a look at the web site of www.cycletrainingeast.org.uk  Cycle Training East is a 'not for profit' company set up to promote safe cycling.
